The Magnolia Story: 5 Reasons You Should Read It

For 2019, I decided to make a reading list for myself to help me stay on track! I have over 50 books on my list and it keeps growing. Just too many books I want to read! One of the top books on my list is The Magnolia Story by Chip and Joanna Gaines.

I jumped into reading The Magnolia Story as my first book of the new year and wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I honestly thought it would be a book about their journey of being on HGTV. Boy, was I wrong! Chip and Joanna Gaines not only go into their whole back story, but they also have some fantastic life and business advice!

I picked up this book and could not put it down because I enjoyed hearing their story, but also hearing about their business struggles. They are very candid in their financial, personal, and business woes throughout the entire book. Not only that, but they share how they achieved some of their biggest successes! With that being said, I want to share with you my 5 reasons to read The Magnolia Story!

1.The Banter

One of the first things I noticed when reading The Magnolia Story was the format in which is was written. I knew they both had a part in writing the book, but I had no idea it would be formatted the way it was! Everything from Joanna’s point of view is in one font, and Chip’s is in another. They go back and forth like they are having a conversation and you are sitting down with them in their living room as they tell you these stories.

I’ve never read a book that was formatted this way and I absolutely loved it! It completely captured their authentic attitude and very different personalities. They interject during stories to provide more insight from a different perspective and also correct each other when one of them is being too modest. It’s adorable!

2. The Authenticity

Chip and Joanna Gaines are known for their candid spirit and authentic personalities on their hit TV show Fixer Upper. This translates very well into their writing as they share all their ups and downs as a couple and as business owners. They share some failures and learning moments throughout the book, which provides quite a relief that even they have their moments! Not only that, they share the many struggles they had before, during, and after their claim to fame on HGTV.  They show that they are still their charming and authentic selves even though many would say they “made it” once they became public figures.

“I mean, that's life. Life is never predictable. Life is never really manageable. If your mind-set is always, "I'm just surviving", it seems to me that would wind up being the mind-set for the rest of your life. You'd just get stuck in it.”  -Joanna Gaines, The Magnolia Story

3. The Faith

If you take anything away from reading this book, I hope it’s that they didn’t get to where they are by themselves. They credit all of their successes to God. As you read it, you will see that they are very humble in their success and give all the glory to God. Even their chance to be on HGTV came from an extremely random moment that has God’s fingerprints all over it! God definitely placed them where they are for a reason and I think they have a pretty good grasp on that fact.

“Don’t quit, and don’t give up. The reward is just around the corner. And in times of doubt or times of joy, listen for that still, small voice. Know that God has been there from the beginning—and he will be there until . . . The End.”  -Chip and Joanna Gaines, The Magnolia Story

4. The Ups and Downs

As a business owner myself, reading about how many times they got back up after all their setbacks is truly inspiring! Most would have given up after the first roadblock they faced. But, it didn’t stop them. They trusted they were on the right path and kept going. They trusted God had their backs and continued to put their all into making their dreams a reality.

“It was such a blessing to find myself thriving in the middle of the pain. Unless you find a way to do that, there's always going to be this fake illusion that once you get there--wherever "there" is for you--you'll be happy. But that's just not life. If you can't find happiness in the ugliness, you're not going to find it in beauty, either.”  -Joanna Gaines, The Magnolia Story

They don't sugarcoat their journey to make it look better or to make it seem less messy. If anything, they make sure you know what they did was hard, but also that it’s not impossible to follow your dreams. They followed their business dreams all while growing their family might I add!

5. The Relationship

Chip and Joanna Gaines are truly #relationshipgoals! They have overcome a lot together, they run multiple businesses together, they run a farm together, and they are raising their kids together. You can tell that they truly love and respect each other while reading their descriptions and depictions of each other.

They are the true definition of opposites attract! Chip goes out and buys many things without telling Joanna (as you will read in the book) and it somehow always works out. They work together as a team and trust that they have their family’s best interests at heart. Chip and Joanna seem to bring the best out in each other. And that’s really the goal, right?!

I hope you decide to read it if you haven’t already! It is truly a great read (and a funny one!). I tried not to spoil it too much! You can purchase the book on Amazon by clicking the button below!
